Before my baby was born, I had a plan. By the time my son was 12 weeks old, he was going to be sleeping allllll through the night. Boy – what a reality check that was. Turns out, my breastfed baby was waking up through the night every 2-3 hours. At the time he was sleeping in our room (in his own bassinet). The slightest peep or coo would wake me up, and I would check on him to make sure he was okay.
Since day one we followed the Baby Wise Method that’s based on a sleep, eat, wake cycle. This method really helped get him on track with his daytime naps. We also made sure to incorporate the five S’s suggest by Dr. Harvey Karp in his book, The Happiest Baby on the Block:
- Swaddle (we loved these swaddles because the velcro made life simple)
- Side position
- Shush (any white noise machine works, we use the Hatch Machine)
- Suck (our son loved these)
Once Maternity Leave was Over
A few weeks later, I had to return to work. My son was 24 weeks old and STILL was not sleeping through the night. He was waking up every 3-4 hours. I could not concentrate at work and was pretty much a walking zombie. I decided that something had to be done.
At this point he was rolling over, so we transitioned him out of a swaddle and into a weighted sleep sack. I also had come across the Ferber Method. I had heard about this method before and was always opposed to it. But after reading and learning more about it, I realized that my initial thoughts were based on misconceptions.
